Tyrone

New from Danny Kodak...

Tyrone Jackson, aka Shorty, collects scrap metal for a living in the South Bronx NYC.

Shorty walking under the Bruckner Blvd on his way to redeem some metal items.

Tyrone Jackson, aka Shorty, is an often overlooked member of the South Bronx.  While residents from Hunts Point and Longwood are tossing out thier used bottles, cans, and scrap metal, Shorty is quietly picking them up and making a living off of them - most often 5 cents at a time.  As the person single-handedly responsible for the disposal of tens of tons of metal for the past 25 years, he's the overlooked embodiment of the "green industry" in the burgeoning business of community development in the Bronx.  He works 7 days a week, lugging a shopping cart full of waste for miles in a zig-zag of basements and trashcans.  These photos are brief attempts at documenting a typical day in his life.  Feedback always welcome.  Enjoy.
Also, check out the wheat paste format of showing the work in outdoor mural style.  Thanks to Alejandra, Misra and Alberto of The NYC Bridge Project.
